As of February 2012 - Brick House Bed and Breakfast has CLOSED
A BIG Thanks to all our wonderful guests who have chosen to stay and given such generous feed back. Wellington still has many great places to stay. Check them out at: New Zealand Tourism Guide or Trip Advisor
Brick House is somewhat of a landmark in the historic suburb of Mount Cook. It was built in 1925 by the owner of one of Mount Cook’s brickworks – Mr Murphy – and the bricks in the entrance way carry the stamp of the company “Murphy Bros Wellington”.
The original house plans and builders/ bricklayers instructions make fascinating reading. No expense was spared in the way of materials. The walls (exterior and interior) are cavity brick and the woodwork is Rimu and Matai (native NZ timbers). Each room has its own pattern of leadlight windows with a mixture of bevelled and textured glass, and the floors are polished timber.
When the house was built it sported a billiard room with a full size table, as well as 4 bedrooms and large living areas. Sadly the house fell on hard times in the 1950’s and for several decades was divided into 2 flats. In the 1990’s the house was sympathetically converted back to a spacious family home, and a private courtyard developed at the rear of the house.
Today it is furnished in a style that is in keeping with the period, and most of the furniture is art deco or colonial oak - lovingly collected over the years.
Your hosts Chris and Ruth Miles (and friendly dog Gonzo) will enjoy showing you round and making you feel at home.
